I have seen some sign when I was hunting last year in unit 6 and 7.  I have heard from a lot of people that there is lots of wolfs around there and the elk are getting wiped out fast.  I spent a week there with out seeing or hearing one elk.

I have never seen a wolf but have had them kill cattle both on private land and BLM/Forest grazing allottments. Here are some pictures of a wolf kill just a few days ago. Most of the time you won't even find this much left. This is a yearling calf that probably weight 650 to 750 lbs.

I was thinking about going hunting down that way this year.  I live north of you in a little town called Athol just north of Coeur D Alene.

We have had wolves living near our town in central Idaho for 3 years now. See or hear them quite often. The most recent was a couple of weeks ago when a wolf challenged my husband in our driveway. Trying to report a sighting to FWS is a joke.

On sunday October 17, 2009, My boyfriend and I were out hunting Elk on Medicine Lodge flats. Bob was pulling a sneek on the elk in the rocks and grass. I was waching the whole deal in my binoculars when something caught my eye behind him. A huge black wolf was winding his way through the rocks and grass. How would anyone like to see a predator hunting one of their kids or spouses, I have never been so terrified in my life.

I have lived near Helmer Idaho for just over two years and have seen wolves 3 times. Once last summer while riding my horse, once last winter while driving to Harvard and just this fall while leaving my tree stand during elk season. I have seen tracks twice and hear them or get them to howl back at me often when riding my horse or hunting. I am bummed that the last one was taken in the Palouse/Hells Canyon zone in the last few days, I really wanted to get one in my "backyard". Now I will have to travel a little further up out of Clarkia area which is in the Panhandle zone. Anyone know of pack activity in that area and could give me some hints on where to start I'd Appreciate it.

I live in Avery, Idaho, and we have at least one pack on the west end of town. (Town being 35 full time residents). We have had wolves across the street chasing the neighbors cats, and on our beach. I have to take my dogs out armed with a big light and a gun. It is pretty wierd to be standing on my porch and hear them howling all around me.

I am not going to mess with them. They are as welcome as snakes in my yard. I see one, color it dead. I just won't have it.

And for those of you who haven't already heard this, they also carry a serious cystic type of tapeworm. It is suggested that you use Universal Precautions if you end up handling one. This would include a mask, gloves and preferable protective outerwear. Wipe your feet on purex soaked rags and wash thoroughly after coming into contact. Kayt

Fresh wolf kill 2-3 days old at the 71 mile marker (on the ice) just above Bluff Creek on the St. Joe River. N.Idaho
Several different sets of tracks One of the tracks ws 7 in. long by 4.5 inches wide, Another one was 5.5 inches long by 4.75 inches wide and the third set was 5 inches long by 4 inches wide.  The struggle area was  270 paces at a nearly 3 foot stride, and we suspect there was another kill nearby because there was blood patches  on the hill next to  the road. It snowed on 2-2 til 10 am, and some of the tracks we measured didn't have any snow in them.
