I hunt wolves here in Alaska. I tried using the .223, and made some solid heart/lung shots, but lost the wolfs due to them running and not being able to track it. I thought they would go down fast, but most went for miles. So now I leave the .223 at home and I carry a 30-06. I use either 125gr Speer TNTs or Nosler 165gr Ballistic tips. I prefer to carry the Noslers, they reach out and touch things better than the lighter bullet. Plus I also carry a few Nosler 165gr Partitions just in case I run into a Bear. The area I hunt I am allowed two Grizzlies and three Black Bears.
Alaska Wolves will not bother with a rabbit type call, only Wolf or Coyote howl will get their attention. If you are in Caribou country, a calf bleat will also do the trick. Our Wolves will not mess with a Rabbit, Caribou are too plentiful, and easy to take down.

i'm going to try a distress call of a coyote or something like that, havent thought it out completely but i was thinking a tail and putting it on a spring loaded stand with a string attached to move it. between the calls and the tail that might be enough to get them running in. thoughts anyone?

Hi every one,
a nice guy over at "primos" told me about your site tonight sense I am so vocal about the wolves there... now I can be here...lol... I may be new to your site, but I am no stranger of the wolves, when they moved in from the Frank church quickly moved throught the west fork of the Bitterroot, and found easier picking in the east fork, we had a pack of about 6 attack our horses (during bow season) while they were tied to our horse trailer at 3 in the morning... we never fired a shot as we had horses going everywhere terrified, but one big male came back the next morning at 9 while we were eating breakfast while sitting on a rock out cropping< that time we fired a warning shot into the tree he stood behind, this was 8 or so years ago> and the trouble has just escalated from there, hell we almost ran over one with the truck and trailer year before last, and a wolf bio used our camp and horses to set traps all around to "collar" those that came a creeping!... we had to move camp 5 air miles to hunt after we found out... nice enough guy, just doing a summer/fall job, but he ruined our hunting what was left of it.... any way it's nice to be aboard! all my best to all.... oh by the by, I live in the Bitterroot Valley (wolf central) as we call it, been a res for over 40 years... and the wolves howl NIGHTLY right behind my home! If you have seen a wolf let us know. Include the date, time of day, and approximate location. If you've encountered wolf sign ie tracks, remains feel free to post as well. havent seen one lately but hearing them alot. last night on the way home from work they sounded like they were right in town(elk city, idaho). our elk have moved close to town, I can see them from my window but have been scattered lately due to wolves. |
